National Public Health Week Highlights


National Public Health Week 2025 is April 7th-13th! This year's theme is: For three decades, National Public Health Week has been a cornerstone in advancing health equity, improving community well-being and championing policies that protect and promote public health. As we mark this milestone, join us for a dynamic forum reflecting on the remarkable progress of the last 30 years and charting the path forward. Join us this year in celebrating this year's National Public Health Week! National Public Health Week 2023 occurred April 3-9 and focused on Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health. Our cultures have always shaped our health. We learn from the communities we're born in and that we build together. For this NPHW, we look to community leaders as our health leaders. We celebrate the unique and joyful ways different cultures focus on health. And we look to how we can learn from each other, with humility and openness.

As we focused on the daily theme of violence prevention, we held a screening of the movie Toxic: A Black Woman's Story and held a discussion with Dr. Cheryl Johnson -- watch below!

To celebrate Rural Health in Maryland, we listened to Nicole Morris discuss the healthcare issues faces by the rural Eastern Shore, and how we address them through collaboration and work groups! 

Nicole Morris is a career Public Health Nurse with over twenty years of experience working to improve the health of individuals, families and communities on Maryland's Eastern Shore. She currently serves as the Director for the five-county Mid Shore Health Improvement Coalition, bringing together diverse sectors to address pressing health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and cancer and contributing upstream social and environmental factors such as housing and food insecurity, bias and stigma, and access to healthcare.

Nicole graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and summa cum laude with a Master of Science Degree in Community/Public Health Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She was the recipient of the Cynthia Northrop Award, presented to the Outstanding Graduate of the Community/Public Health Nursing Specialty.

She lives in Easton, Maryland with her family and enjoys traveling, camping, and foraging for wild edible plants with her two teen daughters.

The 2022 APHA Annual Meeting and Expo in Boston celebrated the 150 year anniversary of APHA and the achievements in public health policy and science that APHA and its members have facilitated. This year had over 12,000 people in attendance and came with some huge wins for the Maryland Public Health Association! 

Some highlights from this year include:

  • MdPHA received the Excellence in Climate Leadership Award from the APHA Center for Climate, Health and Equity. This award recognizes APHA affiliates and member groups that have prioritized climate and health equity within their advocacy work.

  • MdPHA was selected as  a participant for the Center for Climate, Health and Equity’s APHA State Partners for Climate and Health Equity program. This pilot program strives to advance state and local policies that equitably address the health impacts of climate change by bringing together local chapters of health and public health professionals to partner with community groups most affected by climate change.

  • MdPHA President and President-Elect, Jody Gan and Suparna Navale presented on “Involving and Utilizing Students to Expand Affiliate Presence”

  • President, Jody Gan, represented Maryland as Affiliate Representative to the Governing Council

  • President-Elect, Suparna Navale represented the Epidemiology Section at the Governing Council

  • MdPHA Communications committee chair, Kelly Umaña, presented to the Latino Caucus for Public Health on the importance of community health workers in the Latino community

  • Our amazing intern, Lily Duboff, presented her research  “Amplifying Young Adult Voices on Sexual Health” during a poster session

  • MdPHA hosted a regional coffee hour with Delaware and Pennsylvania affiliates to discuss collaboration across states and our upcoming Tri-State Conference in March highlighting efforts to work as a region in addressing climate change and health and how we both work together and learn from neighboring states' efforts to address this collective public health threat.
